IBC covers explained: how to protect IBC contents from frost, heat and UV damage

As colder weather approaches, an IBC cover can help reduce exposure to temperature changes during storage and transport. Some liquids thicken or freeze in cold conditions, while heat and direct sunlight can affect other products. Oakland Industrial’s reusable IBC covers include two Paltherm options: Foil-Bubble for everyday thermal protection and Foil-Quilt for contents that are highly sensitive to temperature change. This guide explains what covers do and how to choose between them.

What is an IBC cover?

An IBC cover is a fitted insulated jacket that goes over the container and cage to slow heat transfer. Depending on its construction, it can help reduce exposure to cold and deflect excess heat. It does not actively heat or cool the contents, so it should not be treated as a substitute for temperature-controlled storage where that is required.

The type of IBC, its capacity and the way staff need to access it will all affect which cover is suitable.

Why IBC contents need protecting

Frost and cold

A cold snap can affect liquids in different ways. Some may become thicker and harder to transfer, while others may crystallise or freeze. If contents freeze or expand, the container’s valve or fittings may be affected, depending on the product and IBC design.

An IBC jacket adds insulation around the container, which can slow the rate at which the contents lose heat. It does not guarantee that the liquid will stay above its freezing point. Consider the product’s storage requirements, the likely exposure time and the conditions at the storage or transport location.

Heat

Heat can affect product consistency or performance, particularly where a liquid must remain within a specified temperature range. A cover designed to deflect excess heat can provide an added layer of protection, but it does not control temperature by itself.

For products with strict storage limits, confirm what temperature range is required and whether the storage environment can maintain it. A cover can form part of the plan, alongside suitable storage and monitoring.

UV and weather

Direct sunlight can expose the IBC bottle and its contents to UV and heat. A foil cover places an additional layer between the bottle and direct sunlight, but Oakland’s product information does not specify a UV protection rating. If a particular level of UV resistance is essential, confirm the cover’s suitability before ordering.

Outdoor storage also brings changing weather conditions. Check that the container, fittings, cover and storage area are appropriate for the conditions, and do not assume an insulated cover is a weatherproof enclosure.

Which products benefit most from an IBC cover?

Food ingredients and syrups may need protection where temperature changes could affect their handling or quality. The required conditions depend on the ingredient and its specification.

Chemicals and solvents may also be sensitive to temperature changes. Confirm the product’s storage requirements and the compatibility of the IBC and cover with the work being carried out.

Water-based products and adhesives can change in consistency or usability when stored in unsuitable conditions. Oils and lubricants may also become harder to handle when cold. In each case, use the product information and site requirements to decide whether an insulated IBC cover is appropriate.

Foil-Bubble and Foil-Quilt: choosing the right IBC cover

Cover Construction Best suited to Starting price
Paltherm Foil-Bubble Air bubble membrane coated on both sides with aluminium foil Cost-effective, everyday thermal protection £71.50 ex VAT
Paltherm Foil-Quilt Six layers of multifoil insulation, with a finished thickness of 15mm Contents highly sensitive to temperature change during storage, distribution or international shipping £95.50 ex VAT

The Paltherm Foil-Bubble IBC Cover is the lighter, cost-effective everyday option. Its construction is designed to help deflect heat in summer and reduce exposure to cold in winter.

The Paltherm Foil-Quilt IBC Cover has six layers of multifoil insulation and a finished thickness of 15mm. It is intended for contents that are highly sensitive to temperature changes, including products held in storage, distributed between locations or shipped internationally.

Both options are reusable and the product listings specify 300-litre, 600-litre and 1,000-litre IBC capacities. The covers are available with drop-over, Velcro, top-cap access or combined Velcro and top-cap access. Confirm the selected variant and current price when ordering.

What to look for in an IBC cover

Fit and access

Check the IBC’s capacity and dimensions before choosing a cover. Oakland’s options include drop-over styles, Velcro openings, top-cap access or a combination of Velcro and top-cap access.

Think about how staff fill, sample or empty the IBC. A suitable access option can make routine tasks easier without requiring staff to remove the whole cover each time.

Labelling and identification

A document wallet or clear labelling can help keep product information visible during storage and handling. Custom branding is also available, which may help identify containers used for different products, processes or locations.

Make sure any labels remain legible and that the cover does not obscure information staff need to see. Check that the selected access and labelling options suit the way the container is used.

Reuse and operating cost

Both Paltherm covers are reusable. Their value will depend on how often they can be used in your operation and how they are handled and stored between uses. Include inspection and replacement in the comparison with single-use wraps, rather than assuming a fixed number of uses.

If temperature protection is also needed for palletised goods, Oakland supplies other insulated covers for different load formats.

Getting the most from your IBC covers

Fit the cover before temperatures begin to drop or rise. Make sure the cover is the correct size and that the chosen opening gives staff access to the cap, valve or sampling point they need.

Where possible, keep IBCs off very cold floors and store them in an area suited to the product. A cover works as one part of a storage arrangement, alongside sensible positioning, suitable containment and the controls required for the contents.

Check the cover for damage and follow the care instructions provided. If an IBC is stored over a spill tray, confirm that the cover and tray do not interfere with access, inspection or spill response.

Common questions about IBC covers

Do IBC covers stop contents freezing completely?

No. An insulated cover can slow heat transfer, but it does not actively heat an IBC or guarantee that its contents will stay above freezing. Check the product’s storage requirements and assess the conditions the container will face.

Can I fill or sample an IBC without removing the cover?

Access depends on the option selected. Oakland offers versions with Velcro openings, top-cap access or both, so check the product variant against the way staff need to use the IBC.

Are IBC covers reusable?

Yes. Both Paltherm options are reusable. Inspect them regularly and follow the supplied care guidance.

Can IBC covers be branded or made to size?

Custom branding is available. For bespoke requirements, contact Oakland Industrial to discuss the specification and request a quote.
