What happens inside a dry van shipping container?

A dry van container has no active temperature control. Its steel roof and walls absorb solar radiation throughout the day, transferring heat towards the cargo. Limited air movement means this heat can be slow to escape.

The outside temperature therefore tells only part of the story. A container temperature study recorded a reading above 60°C at the inner surface of an unprotected green container when the ambient air temperature was 31°C. The study also found that cargo-space temperatures may remain above 35°C for days or weeks, depending on the route.

Cargo, packaging, pallets and the surrounding air do not heat and cool at the same rate. These differences can produce localised temperature changes and cause moisture to condense on cooler surfaces.

Water may already be present in timber pallets, packaging or cargo when the doors close. Moisture that condenses on the roof and walls can drip onto goods as container rain. The international CTU Code recognises this risk for containers travelling on long journeys.
